Traverse Tompkins is an outdoor exploration of local history to benefit The History Center. Gather friends and family to cheer you on as you traverse your own route tying together local sports. Every mile counts—whether it’s a 2-mile walk, a half-marathon run, or a century cycling ride! We’ve got a starter map highlighting some of the spaces featured in our current exhibit – but we’re excited for everyone to share more history through a sporting lens while building your own virtual race!
In celebration of our current exhibit, “A Sporting Chance: On and Off the Field,” this year’s Traverse Tompkins encourages our supporters to build their own course exploring our local sports history. From the Farmer’s Market, the home for the International Rutabaga Curl, to Lynah Rink, our community is full of local sports history. As you explore local history, you can also make a difference in preserving it by asking others to support your effort—whether you’re going 1 mile or 287 miles!
As you chart out your own course, explore our PocketSights tour of some local sports sights in Tompkins County – some of these sports have a longer history than others, but we’re always excited to preserve history of any age for future generations. No matter how many miles you do, we’re excited to see how many places folks will be able to explore!
