The Finger Lakes Runners Club is hosting a virtual run to benefit the Finger Lakes Running Company—Ithaca’s only specialty running shop. The COVID-19 pandemic is hitting small businesses especially hard, and many will struggle to stay afloat without community support.

Ian Golden’s Finger Lakes Running Company has been a pillar in the Ithaca community for the past 14 years—as a specialty retail outlet, a frequent sponsor of local races, a financial supporter for many local non-profit organizations and fundraising events, a hub for all running-related activity, and an all-around champion of the #ShopLocal campaign. Ian depends on his business to help pay the bills and support his family.

There is no cap on the number of entrants, and the Finger Lakes Runners Club wants to raise as much money as possible to help Ian. 100% of the proceeds—every single cent—from this virtual event will be donated to the Finger Lakes Running Company to be used as needed while closed under the “New York State on PAUSE” executive order.

Registration is only $20 (plus a $3.25 UltraSignup fee—consider it a donation to help Mark Gilligan, the guy behind UltraSignup, who has helped the club with the Finger Lakes 50s many times over the years) with the option to donate an additional amount if you wish! 100% of funds received (less the UltraSignup fee) will go to benefit the Finger Lakes Running Company.

We encourage you to post pictures and a recap of your run to the Finger Lakes Runners Club General forum and social media. Take pictures, share stories, and use hashtags #RunGorges and #SaveOurShops. Video chat on the treadmill. Live stream your trail run. Let’s reach as many people as possible and have as much fun as we can while physically distancing. Self-reported results will be published to our Web site after the conclusion of the run.

Run a total of 19 miles during the week of April 27–May 3. If 19 miles is too much, we also have 1.9-mile and 19k (11.8-mile) options. This can be on roads, track, trail, treadmill, a 1983 StairMaster 6000™, laps around your living room coffee table—it doesn’t matter! You can run the miles all at once or split them up between multiple days. Walk, hike, skip, or bear crawl if you don’t want to run. What’s important is that we are paying it forward and giving back to the community.

Submit your total completion time via UltraSignup (may require some math if you split days) to be entered in the results and to be eligible for the gift card drawing. Results must be submitted before 11:59 p.m. on May 4. Self-reported results will be published to our Web site after the conclusion of the run.

This is a virtual run, so you can run anywhere you choose. Please remember to follow Finger Lakes Runners Club’s guidelines for physical distancing so you can enjoy running while reducing the risk of spreading coronavirus. In particular, avoid groups and crowded areas. Be sure to comply with your municipality’s, county’s, and state’s orders and guidelines as well.

Everyone gets the chance to give back to a small business owner who has already given a lot to our community. In addition to the stress-reducing benefits of exercise during stressful times, everyone who submits their time will receive a digital finisher’s medal.

The Finger Lakes Runners Club will purchase 10 gift cards from Finger Lakes Running Company and randomly draw names from runners who have completed the virtual race. Ten names will be drawn for the shop’s from those who submit their results before the deadline and are deemed eligible for the drawing. (See below for the giveaway rules.) Each winner will be emailed a code $50 gift card that can be used over the phone or online while the shop is closed, or used in-store once it reopens.

Vinny Cappadora from Happily Running has donated an additional $50 gift card for his company to be added to the drawing, which can be used for apparel or toward a race entry via his Web site. This brings it to 11 winners total.

1. No purchase is necessary to enter. By participating, you agree to be bound by these rules and the decisions of FLRC.
2. This drawing is open to anyone 18 years and older except FLRC board members, employees, and their families. One entry per person. Any use of automated entry methods will void all such entries made by such methods.
3. To enter the drawing, you must register for the run and submit your results before the deadline, 11:59 PM on May 4, 2020.
4. FLRC collects personal information from you when you enter. This information will be used solely for the operation of the drawing and, other than the winners’ information, will not be shared with third parties. All information collected is covered by the FLRC privacy notice. FLRC reserves the right to publish the name of the winners without additional permission.
5. Ten (10) winners will receive a gift card for Finger Lakes running Company worth $50.00. One (1) winner will receive a gift card for Happily Running worth $50.00. No alternative prize or cash substitution will be made in place of the specified items. All prizes will be awarded. All federal, state, and local taxes, fees, and duties are the responsibility of the prize winners.
6. The odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries. The winners will be determined by random drawing from all eligible entries received at the UltraSignup Web site before 11:59 PM on May 4, 2020. All decisions of FLRC are final and binding.
7. The winners will be notified by email within 3 business days of the drawing and will be announced on the FLRC forum. The winners have 10 business days to claim the prize by sending email to FLRC per instructions provided in the notification. FLRC is not responsible for and shall not be liable for any late, lost, or misdirected notification, or for winners’ unsuccessful efforts to claim any prize. Watch your spam filters! If FLRC cannot contact the winners or if winners prove to be ineligible, FLRC will select alternate winners by random drawing.
8. In the event of a dispute regarding who submitted an online entry, the entry will be deemed submitted by the person assigned to the winner’s email address by the organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the winner’s email address’s Internet domain. FLRC reserves the right to disqualify any entrant in violation of these rules.
9. FLRC shall not be liable for:
   1. (i) telephone, electronic, hardware or software program, network, Internet, or computer malfunctions, failures, or difficulties of any kind;
   2. (ii) failed, incomplete, garbled, or delayed computer transmissions;
   3. (iii) any condition caused by events beyond the control of FLRC that may cause the drawing to be disrupted or corrupted;
   4. (iv) any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising in connection with or as a result of the prize, or acceptance, possession, or use of the prize, or from participation in the drawing; or
   5. (v) any typographical errors in any materials associated with the drawing.

FLRC reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or cancel the drawing at any time if a computer virus, bug, or other technical problem corrupts the administration, security, or proper operation of the drawing.
