Message from race director Rick Hoebeke
Good morning, everyone, the second morning after!
Let me start by saying that this year's mile far exceeded any
expectations that Tom Hartshorne and I had for this race. In spite of
foul weather, some injuries to runners, and illnesses, we had a record
number of runners finish...51 men, 24 women (75 finishers!). That's
incredible! Thanks to all the runners for making this happen.
The races went off without any hitches that I am aware of...very smooth
running throughout. And that is a testament to the superb volunteerism
of HNAC and FLRC we see every year, but this year in particular. In no
particular order, Tom H. and I would like to provide our thank you's to
all who helped on Saturday; you know and others as well what you did:
John Whitman, Jim Bisogni, Joe Reynolds, Jim Miner, Joe Simpson, Tim
Ingall, Jeffrey Juran, Derek Dean, Bob Dattola, Charlie Fay, Gerhard
Schmidt, Jon Conrad, Jim Liebherr, Joe Daley, Adam Engst, Herb Engman,
Bruce Roebal, Diane Sherrer, and Victoria Smith (for the cookies and
friendly cheer), and Scott Weeks (rabbit for the men's elite race). I
hope I didn't leave out anyone; if I did, it was truly unintended. Huge
thanks to Terry Ciasci and the wait staff of the Station Restaurant for
hosting our awards banquet; also another record with 48 in attendance!
And last but not least, the Cornell T&F program who each year allow us to
be a part of one of their indoor meets. They have always helped me and
Jim Hartshorne in the past with all logistics of race day
preparations. This year, Assist. Coach Artie Smith saw to it that all
runners had a fully automatic time, and the official starter of the
Cornell meets, Daniel Hurley, came early from Elmira to start all of our
heats. Thanks to all!
I want to especially acknowledge and thank my co-director and elite
athlete coordinator, Tom Hartshorne. He has provided me with a huge
boost in the past couple of years. He alone has helped ramp up this mile
a notch. His recruiting skills in finding and communicating with the
elite milers out there are exceptional. And he delivers....just look at
the men's and women's elite field this past Saturday. What he does to
make this happen goes way beyond description; suffice it to say it is a
colossal effort, but he does it for the love of our sport. Thanks,
Tom...you will make a fabulous race director of this world-class event
when that time arrives. In the meantime, I look forward to at least
another 3 years of working with Tom.
Jimmy B. has already posted the results to the HN listserv, and Adam has
provided on-line digital photos of the races...Enjoy! And until next
year....
